Major Surendra Poonia is an international award-winning sportsman, Limca book
record holder, physician and former Special Forces officer of the Indian Army.
He is the first Indian athlete with the rare distinction of having won 27 medals in 5 world championships in Croatia, Spain, Turkey & Ireland including 10 Golds.
Awards and Career Highlights
1. Graduated from Armed Forces Medical College,Pune.
2. Commissioned in Indian Army on August 14,2001.
3. Joined Special Forces and served in counter insurgency area of Jammu & Kashmir with 2 and 10 Para Special Forces.
4.Served in Highest battlefield of world - Siachen with 2 Para Special Forces.
5.Served in United Nation’s Peacekeeping Mission in Congo(DRC) with 5 Para Airborne.
6.Served in India’s senior most regiment The PBG as President’s Bodyguard with two Presidents of India.
7.On advice and mentor ship of Late President of India Dr APJ Kalam he founded “Soldierathon”- India’s first marathon in honour of Martyrs and Wounded bravehearts of country .
8.He was awarded by the 'Vishisht Seva Medal' (VSM) by the President of India for his 'Distinguished Service of an Exceptional Order' in the field of sports on 26 Jan, 2012 by the President of India Sh. Pranab Mukherjee.
9.He was also awarded thrice by Chief of Army Staff Commendation (COAS) - 2006 ,2010 and 2011 for gallantry and distinguished service .
10.Inducted in the Limca Book of record for highest number of international medal by any India physician in sports .
